PvE vs PvP: The Difference and Which Mode to Choose
By AzFreeGame
PvE means player versus environment: you face enemies or challenges controlled by the game. PvP means player versus player: you compete against other people. Beating a computer-controlled boss is PvE. Duelling another player is PvP.
Want an adventure without human opponents? Start with a dedicated PvE activity. Want to test yourself against other people? Look for PvP. A game can offer both, so the mode you select matters more than the label on its store page.
PvE, PvP and mixed modes
| Mode | Opponents | Possible formats |
|---|---|---|
| PvE | Game-controlled enemies or hazards. | Solo or cooperative. |
| PvP | Human players. | Individual or team competition. |
| PvPvE | Both in one activity. | Team and group rules vary by mode. |

Can I play with friends in either?
Yes, when the mode supports a group. Friends can fight a boss together in PvE or face another team in PvP. Neither label sets the team size: PvE can be a solo adventure, and PvP can be a duel.
For you and your friends against the game, look for a co-op PvE campaign or activity. For only your friends, you also need a private session or a way to disable matchmaking. Co-op describes working together; it does not promise a private group. Our co-op guide explains the connection and copy requirements separately.
What happens in PvPvE?
PvPvE combines game-controlled threats with competition against people. You may also see it written as PvEvP. In Destiny 2's Gambit, teams fight computer-controlled enemies, collect and bank motes, then work toward summoning and defeating a Primeval boss. Each team can also send a player to invade the other team's side.
The enemy waves and boss are the PvE part; the rival team and invasions supply the PvP part. Even if you never choose to invade, an opposing player can enter your side. Staying with the monster-fighting role does not turn Gambit into a PvE-only session. Other mixed modes can use different rules, so check how players are allowed to interfere.

Can I turn PvP off?
Look for a PvE-only mode, a server rule or an explicit opt-out setting. Simply choosing a monster-hunting quest may not protect you: the quest can take place in an area with player invasions or open-world PvP. If the mode offers no way to opt out, avoiding a fight is not the same as disabling attacks from other players.
Sea of Thieves' Safer Seas lets a crew sail without rival player crews, but it has different feature and progression limits. Rare's updated explanation lists full gold and reputation rates for eligible activities, with Trading Company progression capped at rank 25. Older advice quoting 30% rewards and rank 40 predates the December 2024 rebalance. Avoiding PvP does not necessarily give you every activity from the shared mode.
Difficulty, lost items and taking a break
PvE is not automatically the easier or more relaxed option. Choose by what you want from a session:
- Less pressure: look for adjustable difficulty, assists or practice modes. A PvE boss can be demanding, and an unranked PvP match can still contain skilled opponents.
- Little progress lost on defeat: check death penalties. A short respawn is very different from losing your inventory, regardless of who defeated you.
- Safe to leave between sessions: in games with bases, check whether other players can raid your stored items or damage buildings while you are away.
- Frequent interruptions: check whether the mode actually pauses. Opening a menu in online PvE may leave the world running.
Connection requirements are separate too. PvE can require internet, while local PvP can mean two friends competing on one console. Neither abbreviation tells you whether a game works offline.
